Postage has increased, forcing performing arts organizations to expect costs for direct mail increase by as much as thirteen percent. Add this expense to costs for printing, data processing and the mail house, and the need for a better solution is eminent.

Traditional mail marketing with no greater service or value will diminish cost efficiency even more. Response rates are already beleaguered, and have been flat or decreasing for many years. If return on a marketing investment automatically decreases because of increased expenses, stakeholders will insist on alternatives.

The printed brochure has been at the center of performing arts direct mail subscription and membership campaigns for years. 'Marketing By Brochure' is the standard. Mail campaigns, fortunate to have been developed by a competent direct response agency, have benefited from tricks of the trade. But, even with creative visual design, the core elements of the brochure are the same.

Alternatives to brochure marketing, without sacrificing response, are there and have been around for years. In fact, these alternatives not only save time and money, but have also increased results in many cases.

I have been doing Yellow Page design for the past 15 years. I have been fully submerged in the medium. Even as I sit here writing this article I have various Yellow Page directories from all over the US stacked on my desk. It’s an art form, I tell you. Few comprehend its power. Few understand the subtle blend of art and science that combines to create the successful Yellow Page ad design. It takes a true connoisseur to understand the underlying …

2. E-Mail - has it lost its way part one
Judging by the number of unrequested e-mails that arrive in my inbox everytime I log on, the world is filled with hustlers trying to sell me everything from cheap drugs to cheap mortgages to highly dubious sex toys. It is an avalanche of garbage, which very quickly gets consigned to the waste bin. I’ve set up e-mail rules to filter some of this out - but still there is a significant amount that creeps through and clogs up my in-basket.There are t…

It's 1954. Yes, Mrs. Patricia Smith has been a good teacher today. She has remained on task and kept her Third Grade Pupils in line. But she doesn't have to work too hard at it. She weighs 200 Lbs and if she ever grabs you and shakes you, and you can see the buttons on her blouse coming at you at almost the speed of light, so much so that you end up hypnotized and your brain feels like a pea soup - this is something you're not going to forget …
