To attract those first customers to visit your site you need a headline more than you need anything else. If you don't grab their attention in the first few seconds while the page is loading you may have missed your chance.

Therefore, a headline in this case becomes the ad for your website. A headline should have one motive and that is to tout your number 1 benefit. If what you are selling will increase the visitor's sales, improve their complexion, straighten their golf swing then let them know about it in the headline.

Here's an example: How to Rid Yourself of Acne Forever In 14 Days!

Now, that should get anyone with an acne problem to read down into the page. Also, I might add that “How to” is the number one best intro to an ad ever.

Take an hour or so and practice writing ads that spout your number 1 benefit. Don't confuse benefits with a feature. A benefit fits into the category of “what have you done for me lately.” Your headline should be all about the customer and not how your product was number
one in sales last year.

It is important to remember this one fact while thinking of a headline. 5 times more people will read your headline than will read your whole ad. That's impressive statement. So, lets look at some lead in words to give your headline some punch from the get-go.

Here are some of the most powerful lead in words ever used. And they still work.

1. At last!
2.Announcing!
3.New!

These words get attention quickly. And be advised, you can only use the word new if your product is actually new.

Another way to grab attention is to use words that apply to your target audience. For example, you have a tool that makes unplugging drains. This product is revolutionary. Someone that might be interested in you tool would be:

1. Plumbers!
2. Husbands!
3. Housewives!

You see by choosing a noun that describes your target audience you capture their attention most quickly.

To carry this idea into our next section, let's assume that we now want to name our number one benefit for the tool. Did you get that? Your number one benefit should be in the headline. Let's try it.

Plumbers! Never have to go back to your truck again for the right tool to unclog a customers drain!

Husbands! Unclog that kitchen drain the fastest way possible and get back to your ballgame!

Housewives! You don't need your man to come and unclog that kitchen drain!

As you can see, the interested parties are compelled to read on. What in the world they ask themselves could be so unique and easy to use. And then you should follow up those thoughts with a bullet list of benefits and launch into the body of your ad copy.

Other ideas of getting people to read your ad include:

Making it Newsworthy.
Thousands saved by simple household product!

Promise a unique benefit.
Never clean your shower basin again!

Offer something free.
Free report explains swamp gas!

Ask an intriguing question.
Ever seen swamp gas!

Lead with a testimonial.
Joe Baker says, our backyard zapper kills 100
times the bugs of any other garden repellent!

Lead with a 'How-to' as already mentioned.
How to Get Your Children to Keep Their Room
Clean.

Use a Quiz.
Can You Name the Most Used Tool in the Home?

Use the words 'These' and 'Why'
These bug zappers kept the bugs away all summer.
Why Dogs want to pee on your carpet.
And by the way, why do they?

Use your product name in the headline. (This in my opinion is best used after a certain amount of product branding has occurred.)
Fantastico Webhosting chosen number one on
the internet!

Using reasons help the reader to understand why he should read on.
3 Reasons Not to Call the Gardener when you
see swamp gas in the backyard!

I can't tell you the grief you will save yourself by abiding by that one.

Make the product, tool or service seem easy.

Cleaning the bathtub has never been easier.

That should be enough ideas to let you have fun creating your first headline. I know I had a great time just writing this for you.

If you want to know more about writing ad copy I suggest that you learn from the masters. There are many both old and new. However, today the master of ad copy is most often thought to be Dr. Joe Vitale, a hypnotist that has trademarked Hypnotic Marketing and HypnoticWriting.

I highly recommend his books and courses above all others. They are the road to true success on the internet Afterall, if you cannot write a good ad it will cost you big time for someone to do it for you. So, who better to learn from than a master?
